A Shadetree's 930 Rebuild

So I'm about to embark on my first engine rebuild. The 930 gave up the ghost out of no where last season and its time to get her running again.

Figuring that I have a pretty steep learning curve ahead of me, and that others may be in the same boat, I am going to try and document: the rebuild; tools, parts and costs; and the challenges of getting a previously de-smogged 400+ hp 930 to pass California emissions (although I'm not holding my breath).

Not only is it my first rebuild but its also my first blog so bear with me.

I'll be using Wayne's book as well as the collective knowledge here on Pelican extensively.

Sounds exciting.

I will be following your progress.

Best of luck - I bet you'll make it.

Thanks Jesper!

Good for you!

DIY is the only way to fly in my opinion. I don't care how big your checkbook is. Nobody cares about your car more than you, and nobody will give it the attention to detail that you can.

Take your time, read, think, have fun.

EDIT: I saw your tool shopping list. Save yourself $25 and dont buy the flywheel lock. It doesn't work on the 930 with its different pressure plate and ring gear config vs. the 911.

Best of luck Rob! My small oil leak problem I have documented will seem like nothing compared to your project. Will be fun to follow along and learn from your experience. Thanks for sharing!

Hey Rob,
I'm in W.C pretty much every week (or through and around anyway) .. if you need any help or advise of questionable value I'm available!!

Great project.
IMHO, another helpful hint might be to keep a notebook of what you take apart and the order it came apart in. It's a real pain in the grommet to have an oil pump left over.
I would reiterate what "jwasbury" said 3 posts ago about taking the time, reading, pondering, and having fun with the project.

I'd like to follow along too. Will you be posting updates here as well or just on your blog?

Thanks guys...

re: the flywheel lock... too late on that one... already purchased. The intent of that list on my blog is to keep a running tally of parts and costs as the process unfolds.

This will definitely a test of my patience (which I am normally lacking) but I'm really looking forward to it. Hopefully you guys will check back in every now and then on the blog and let me know what you think.

My plan is to post the real meat of the content on my blog. I'll likely provide some periodic updates to this thread as well though.

Motor arrived yesterday morning. Unfortunately without a cherry picker, or a couple of extra bodies on hand, I was stuck leaving the motor on the pallet for the time being. Anxious to get a jump start I went to work removing the CIS injection system, wiring harness, engine tins / shroud and fan.

One thing I ran into on a couple of the hard oil lines was that the fittings that attached to the engine seemed to have been locked up. I was always under the impression that the intended design allowed you to spin the fastener while keeping the hard line stationary. two different fittings were locked up to the point where I had to detach the opposing end of the line and then spin the entire piece to remove it from the engine. Is there something I can soak these in before re-installing so that they work as intended?

the connection is very close to the bend in the tube and just a little out of round will make it hard to spin. put a rag around it and very carefully squeeze it to make it round that should do it but be careful if you go to much or the wrong way it could be a mess and you could end up needing a new line good judgement must take place!!
