porsche 930, Kokeln intercooler and K27 question

Howdy all, i'm new around here and just joined up with rennlist last week, been really impressed with these sites, its great that so many people are as passionate about there porksters as I am.
Quick summery, recently got my hands on a 1980 porsche 930 that had spent a fair amount of time in storage, car has been fired up with major service completed and is running beautifully. Included in sale was a box of upgrades that the previous owner was unable to complete which include a used but very good condition Kokeln intercooler minus any plumbing and fittings( are these still available or are substitutes available) and a K27-7200 used turbo with shaft play and in need of overhaul.
I have been looking at quotes to rebuild and have been met with many questions as to what im looking for ie K27HF or a Garrett R35 cold side rebuild...................errrr no idea what im looking for?
The car is stock standard other than having a Monty exhaust system with twin 100mm pipes. Just wondering if its worth doing the upgrades and weather it will make the car more fun to drive or should i just leave it be and enjoy it as is. Thanks for any tips or advice. Great site.

Welcome!
With these cars there is no down side to upgrades unless you go too far. Intercooler and K27 will make a huge impact on performance and driveablilty. How the K27 is rebuilt depends on what you want out of the engine. Hi-flow turbos need headers and more boost to be fully utilized. They also pull hard up top so if you don't run up the rpm's they also are not fully utilized. The 7200 is a vast improvement over the 3LDZ all by itself.
You can find the missing parts for your Kokeln here in the classifieds and new from out host.

Will the K27-7200 require any additional brackets or attachments from the stock 3LDZ installation

Pretty sure you can use the same bracket, someone else will chime in.

A big improvement will be ditching the baffle design Monty and getting something freeflowing from Brian (Rarely L8) above, you won't believe the difference in lag reduction/drivability.

The 3LDZ bracket will not work unmodified - some have simply been able to oval/slot the holes on the engine side, but others, like me, have had to cut/weld/bend the OEM bracket to get it to work.

Somebody needs to make a universal style bracket for this application.
Maybe take a stock one and cut long slots to allow most configurations, would sell a crapload I'm sure.....sounds like a rarlyl8 project to me.

ok so I need a K27 bracket from porsche 965, is that correct?
For the Kokeln inter cooler installation I have so far sourced a 965 intake boot and a turbo cut off valve, is there anything else that I will need?

A K27 bracket for the 930 is on my short list, I've sure made enough of them.

You will have to slot or cut/weld your 930 bracket to fit the K27, the 965 bracket is the exact same as the 930 bracket so that won't work.

You have the big items for the Kokeln, now just make a few hoses.

If those links don't help, let me know. Somewhere I've got a list of part numbers that make up the "kokeln intercooler installation kit", I could try to dig it out of my files this weekend.

Thanks again guys, K27 has been send off for a rebuild and a bracket is being welded.
The Kokeln looks a little dusty and grimy inside, can I do any damage to it by giving it a dip in a mild acid bath? My intention is to spray it matt black prior to installation.

Mild acid (like vinegar) is probably ok. Just don't even think about getting any bases (sodium hydroxide and the like) anywhere near the aluminum unless you want your IC to dissolve into a cloud of hydrogen gas.

Actually, a good strong detergent solution will work just fine to cut any oil and grime that may be inside.

Hi guys just about there, on the front right side corner of the inter cooler there is a threaded hole, by looking at other set ups it seems to be lacking a small L shaped bend around an inch long with a square head on it? Any ideas what is, also what is the kokeln made off( stock aluminium), I want to spray it black before installation and will need to get rid of the polished surface.
