K&n air intake system for porsche 930
 

Howdy all
I notice quite a few people seem to be replacing the old air intake boxes with K&n air intake systems. What are the major advantages and which specific system are they installing?

Only real advantage is access, particularly if you have an adjustable WUR. Really opens up the engine area. it's amazing how much space the stock air filter and housing take up. Sounds cooler too..

go to your local auto store, buy a small (Holley style) round filter and housing, toss the element that comes with it, then order a K&N from Summit that fits. Very cheap. As stated above, I know of no performance increase at all, as I think RarlyL8 has done dyno testing on this. Much easier engine access and incredible intake sounds when leaning on it.

The major advantage is opening up the engine bay for much easier access around the engine. I think it makes the engine bay look "cleaner", less cramped. No big power advantage. If anything, maybe a few extra horses.

What do you do with the hoses going into the original airfilterbox?

I extended the big breather hose from the oil tank and fed it through the engine tin outside the engine bay into the LHS wheel well. I'll be either doing the same with the overflow from the WUR, or feeding it into the K&N (a la factory setup). The other big hose that fed into the airbox (close to the metering plate) I believe was from the air injection and was plugged a long time ago.

Some people put little filters on all these, and/or a catch can for the oil tank breather. I've never seen any oil come out of this breather line, just a few occasional fumes.

Engine bay no longer smells of oil fumes which is nice.

You can "manifold" all the breathers using a 1.5" fuel hose and some fittings; connecting the engine oil filler neck, gas fumes canister, WUR release nipple , and the turbo breather to the top of the "new air filter holder".

I had originally just put smaller K&N filters in the end of the hoses, but that led to oil dripping over the top of the motor. So, I put an oil catch can on and mounted it back towards the firewall. The hose off the WUR, I just ran some fuel hose down and out from the engine bay.

Joined the ranks of those installing a K&N RU-5163 air filter. So much space now but I'll have to re-adjust the A/F ratio. Still, sweet setup! Oh, and I already have an oil catch can in place.

How are you securing the filter to the metering housing.

^ The filter is secured via a large diameter hose clamp comes with it (the K&N filter, that is) . . .

It came with a matched hose clamp - fits perfectly. I did have to cut the insulation pad to make space for the top of it though. My WUR overflow is now safely routed out of the engine bay as well though once I have time I'll hook it all up so the fumes and WUR overflow feed into the air filter similar to the factory setup.

I have also fitted the main filter plus 3 additionals for the Turbo and oil tank pipes. Love the space especially as it allows easy access to my WUR.
As yet no oil dripping, but early days.
i see no other benefits apart from access. As i have a Targa i can hear a slight increase in Induction noise but not alot.

A good mod.

Another benefit - with everything vented to the outside I no longer have a smelly engine bay and even the garage is free of the fumes that used to linger

I used the same two OEM long bolts that hold down the OEM filter housing.

Afternoon! So just got the K&N filter delivered, as well as a catch can. Wanted to be sure I was plugging the correct hoses, or using the catch can where needed. I love the idea of having it all vent out the wheel well, but not sure which hose should go where...
