Which GT35R for my build?
This is a new build - Full Sequential EFI with Carrera manifold, heads port matched to manifold, twin-plug, 3.5 liter with 8.0:1 Nickies and JE pistons, ARP head-studs and bolts, etc. What configuration of the GT35R should I select? This will be a street motor, so torque, longevity, and quick boost will be the goals.

EFI, carrera manifold, twin-plug, 3.5 CR 8:1 and GT35R..... WHY SC cams with all theses great parts !? You need 964 or GT2 cams ;)
GT3582R with a/r 0.82 is a great turbo, from 380 to +500HP... but for 500 you need 964 or GT2 cams. |
This sounds exactly like my build....I went with GT35R with , .82 AR, T3 Flange, V-band discharge, single-scroll, and NO anti-surge housing (increases boost spool-up slightly, not needed on these engines). And - no water cooling - left ports open
The difference was AMAZING and full boost just under 3000RPM. Tires will spin and 1st and 2nd, almost in 3rd. Dyno'd at 540WHP at 1.1BAR (max recommended with 8:1 static compr). +1 on 964 Cams - I love my build - fast spool/minimal lag, amazing power throughout power-band, and very reliable. If I could turn the boost up, I'm certain the GT35R would pull to infinity. Best money spent! |
I'm a little curious about your cam choice as well. Don't get me wrong, I'm not an engine builder, I don't know enough to say good or bad about SC cams on your build.
How about the new GTX3582R? |
Considering your build, I think you'll want more steam throughout power band/RPMs which the 964 cams will provide. On a stock build, the SC cams are a bit torquier down low, but you'll have more than enough raw power on the low end. RE: GTX - not sure the juice $$ is worth the squeeze, but can't hurt.

Since this is a new build, I would strongly recommend going twin scroll on the Gt35 with the requisite headers. When I finally get around to my EFI conversion, she will be twin scroll. From my research, all else being equal twin scroll should decrease the onset of boost by 5-700 rpm...

How many psi tippy ? a/r .60/.82/1.06 ? cams ?

3.4, 7.5:1, stock Carrera intake, heads, and cams, 1-bar from T60-1 (T4/.81 A/R), 1 5/8 primaries, 3 1/2" muffler straight-through, 4" tip.
Have dyno sheet of 427 whp but was said to have done 447. |
964 cams with 1.26mm timing ? With a CR 7.5:1 maybe you can try 1.2bar with 20° ignition timing.
I don't know the T60-1 turbo, it's like a k27hf or as big as a gt3582 ? |
Mu timing is way above that with single-plug and it's equivalent to a GT35 - just a tad smaller.

Try a little more boost. With my 964 cams, 3.4 single plug and gt35 i get 496rwhp at the dyno with 1.2bar.

GTX wheel or not to GTX wheel... the $600 question (approx. cost difference). On a 3.5L with SC cams and a Carrera manifold, I think you could run it. Make sure you don't get boost creep. If chopping the headers to twin scroll it, we'd configure it with a T04 flange. |
I run a GT3582R 0.82AR turbine with T3 inlet, viand out let and 2" compressor discharge. Open water ports, with EFi and SC cams on otherwise stock motor. 1 bar by 3000rpm, builds strong from 2200rpm. Pulls very hard to 6500 rpm limit. Cams are timed mid to late (1.57 from memory). No oil blowing issues issues at all. Car LOVES the low back pressure exhaust side, lots of low down torque off boost and lovely swelling of torque, not on/off.
I use GSF headers and a F46 tial with .8bar spring and using a turbosmart EBC. I get a little boost spike at 1 bar but no serious creep at my power levels, but know others have with the GSF set up. very impressed with the turbo though, its killer. |
