4-Speed box: 2nd gear set wanted

Looking for a second gear set for the 4-speed 930 box. Mine have wear and could do with being replaced if anyone had a set of stock gears in good condition lying about the place they would be willing to part with.

Thanks....

I might have a set, but I can't get to my locker to look until the 27th. Almost looks like you ran a run-of-the-mill synthetic, rather than a good quality mineral oil.

Well, the gearbox had no oil in it when I got it....so that certainly wouldn't have done it any good. I don't know if it was driven like that....anyway, thanks for that PM sent re the gears.

No idea, but when I got the car before driving it (trailered it home due to vacuum leak causing it to not run well) I checked all fluids and discovered no oil in the gearbox. Filled it and drove but discovered heat exchangers/engine covered in oil after short run. So checked all seals etc but finally traced problem to vent facing the wrong way....faced it forward, problem sorted.

The car was in storage for a number of years before I got it and the previous owner didn't have any info regarding how this could have happened or if it was driven with no oil. The gearbox is out and stripped due to a harshness noise in it - not surprisingly - and the wear on the second gear was noticed, so while the noise wasn't symptomatic of any single gear issue - audible in all gears, and increased with load on the gearbox - its a problem and so will be replaced.

That sounds crazy. Maybe a small leak and over the years they kept cleaning it up not realizing that it was all the transmission fluid. I don't know how long you drove it but there could be a lot of other issues running it with no fluid. You doing the re-build yourself? I just did mine myself, complete, everything rebuilt, bearings, etc. Fun, fun, fun...

If there was a magnetic drain plug in there it must have been covered with a ball of metal particals as it ran out of oil. Bummer.

None that I could see. The pinion main bearing has some wear on it alright, but apart from that and the bit of wear on the second gear its in remarkably good shape. Its getting the full strip to be sure, but so far looks like it wasn't driven much on low / no oil. The car is entered in a historic rally in the south of France 7-9th September so hopefully there wont be a delay in getting it sorted and back into the car.

That pinion bearing is likely toast. Even on a well oiled transmission, the pinion bearing sees a lot of wear, same as the four-point. Just be mindful when replacing pinon bearings that there are "fakes" out there, even from reputable outfits (who may not even know). The so called advertized INA/FAG replacements are not INA's at all. I verified this with INA themselves. Our host had to change the brand name on this bearing for this very reason. The four-point bearings are still FAG and the turbo bearing is available in Germany (a lot of suppliers say this bearing is NLA and try to sell off good used ones).

Thanks for that zcoker - you mentioned the same on the other thread I had on it before it was stripped.

999 110 146 00 is listed as NLA, this is the one you are referring to yes? Is this the one you put up a pic of in the other thread - Noisy Gearbox - '76 930??

That's excellent advice. All bearings should be inspected under 20-30X magnification. They may all be toast.
