I have heard rumor that the stock IC will fit under a ducktail if the outer flange is removed for clearance. Probably just hearsay.

There is a thread about custom ICs to clear a stock decklids. It has been done before.

I built a muffler for a 930 turned RSR clone that had the OEM intercooler under a duck. I'll find a picture for you. It was simple looking, just removed the rubber gasket and trimmed the duck.

Thanks Brian,

I have heard of it but not seen a picture. I was trying to figure out if the trailing edge of the IC would interfere with the grill as the angles are quite a bit different. The ones I have seen had the grill repositioned at a different, more horizontal, flat angle.

There was one really sweet turbo with a duck on the board some years back.

It looked great.

So is a full bay out of the question to fit under a duck?

Uwon 07-04-2013 08:12 PM

It can be done and I'm curently just completing such a project. I'll be posting more updates soon.

Stock 3.3 intercooler will fit under some duck tails if you trim the seal around the body. Here is the polished one in my '73 RS look.[img]

Brooke, Thank you for posting pictures. Great car. Is this recently for sale?

How much clearance is there between the ducktail on the trailing edge of the IC? It looks like it might be tight. I am wondering if a thicker core would fit under there.

Cory, there is certainly room for a full bay as long as the angle and height are about the same. Now I am wondering if a 965 IC would clear.

rswannabe 07-05-2013 02:26 PM

Jamie,

The car is new to me. It was listed for sale here on Pelican about a month ago.

There is almost zero clearance between the trailing edge of the intercooler and the fiberglass of the ducktail. There is no room for a taller intercooler. The only way to use a thicker core would be to have it sit lower. I don't know if that is possible or not (I'm new to the turbo motors and still on the steep part of the learning curve).

I do know you can fit a full bay custom intercooler under a duck tail though. Turbokraft and others have done this.

sundevil64 07-05-2013 02:31 PM

Chris at Turbokraft has done it. I thought there were some pics posted on PP. Sorry, not sure what the thread name was.

Wow a 930 motor in a light long hood? What are you going to do for traction? Are flares in the future? What are you using for a tranny?

You have jpnovak's attention...and mine.

rswannabe 07-05-2013 02:43 PM

I've had the car exactly one week at this time. It is actually an '81 SC backdated to look like a longhood (glass bumpers, hood, and fender extensions). The paint and body work are all relatively fresh (only 5k miles) and looking very nice so they won't be messed with.

I have not really even wrung it out yet due to my schedule and the lower octane here in WA compared to 93 available where it was in PA. The car is running 8.5:1 compression and I'm a little concerned about detonation, so I am taking it a little easy until I get some higher octane in it. Than I want to confirm A/F ratios and boost settings. Supposed to be .8 bar spring in it now, which is running the ragged edge with the higher compression. It also has 964 cams, which lowers the dynamic compression a bit. Motor has 5k miles on it and runs very strong. I think it should be making between 300 and 350 HP at the crank. Very good off boost performance as well. The tranny is a fresh build of a short bellhousing 930 4 speed.

If I find I need more traction I'll stick some 245's on it.

Hi rswannabe
Can you take some picture of your exhaust pipe? the original is too large, I can not fit in.
Many thanks!

sundevil64 07-07-2013 06:15 PM

looks good.

jpnovak 07-07-2013 06:24 PM

Looks like there might even be clearance for an AC rear condenser.

I like it. That car will be a blast once running.

Are you referring to the muffler? I'm running a Monty dual out, so it is not the stock muffler. If you are not referring the the muffler, let me know what it is you want a picture of.

Thanks

Yes, I mean muffler~
I need to find a small one for my car!

Here is the exhaust and muffler on my car. The Monty dual out fits with only a very slight amount of trimming of the rear bumper.

Note the car is running the original early US Y pipe headers with the thermal reactors removed. A Euro style header setup is on the short list of changes to make to the car.
