So I hope I am done pulling stuff off my motor and done spending hours cleaning. here is what it looks like now:

Ooooooooooooo... ^that's^ purrrrrrrrrrrrty
(powdercoating FTMFL IMO) keep pluggin away (noooooooooooooooot buttpluggin... Ronknees' forte!) |
Looks good Jeff.....what did you decide with your injectors?

Based on the colors of my valves, I don't think I am getting even fuel delivery to each cylinder, so I may decide to get the fuel head rebuilt and flow balanced, since that is probably beyond me. |
Your engine looks beautiful! What did you use to clean it?

I used Gunk biodegradable engine degreaser that I picked up at Autozone, some plastic and brass brushes and LOTS of time and elbow grease. |
Jeff-
Looks really good. Clearly a lot of effort put into it and possibly some therapeutic benefit to owner? Will |

Jeff, great job applying plentiful elbow grease - talk about an improvement! However, the next time you have a job like that, hire Paul - he can rub and rub and rub like nobody's business (and then he'll rub some more)! Polishing is that dude's middle name (particular if the item to be polished is cylindrical in shape)!!!
|
Popeye's right forearm ain't got nuttin on mine I'll tell ya!
yers sure cleaned up nicelike... much morer nicerlikerer than mine... well done! do you have any carbon tracing around any of the head surfaces? Just curious since same mileage as mine... |
Definitely some carbon buildup on the piston tops and some in the exhaust ports, but not too much. (I hope) Valve seals look OK, but not great. I am thinking I will probably go two years and then rebuild the heads. If I drive 3k per year, that is only 6k miles. That is the plan, anyway...
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1422242414.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1422242436.jpg YES, the air injectors are coming out. Just waiting on the plugs to get here. If you want any more pics of something for comparison, just let me know. BTW - anyone have an opinion on the whitish color of the exhaust valves? Is that normal, or is it lean? (or something else)? |
Jeff, maybe you already have, but it would be a good idea to start soaking the air injectors with Kroil, or something similar, as they can be difficult to remove without shearing them in the process.

(I'm sure there is a Paul joke in there somewhere) |
I sent my injectors to Larry at CIS Flowtech and he cleaned them and flow tested them and five out of six came back nice. One leaked when closed, so I bought one -017 and am calling it a day with the injectors. Larry is great. Charged $8 per injector to clean and test. Can't beat that! I thought long and hard about upgrading to 009's and maybe even euro fuel head, but decided the slippery slope had to end at some point. Definitely over budget and running out of time to be ready for spring. Maybe next year.
I am still waiting on my struts/shocks to come back from Bilstein for a rebuild, but I got the rest of my suspension bits done. (control arm bushings, ball joints, tie rod ends, strut caps, sway bar bushings, drop links and trailing arm bushings ). Basically, all bushings have been replaced in both the front and rear suspension (spring plate bushings done last year). Waiting on new fuel lines from Len so I can button up the engine bay work. Just got my fan and shroud shipped. Mark sent me pics. I am blown away. There was a crack in one of the supports in the shroud and he was able to weld the magnesium (rare that it works), clean it up, recondition it and ceramic coat it. Here are some pics: Before, showing the crack, cleaned up, and completed. The guy is an artist with this stuff. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1425963304.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1425963337.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1425963354.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1425963372.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1425963386.jpg |
looking good...

Finished my install of my PLX Boost Gauge/Wideband AFR gauge.
Mounted it under the driver's seat by cutting and bending some flat stock steel and using another piece as a pressure fit into the grooves of the control boxes and used 3M tape to keep it in place even though it won't move even without the tape. Ran the boost/vac hose and the AFR sensor cable through the rear firewall, ran the cable for the display to the dash and stole power from the accessory power in the seat connector. Nice and clean, very compact with the cable facing forward so feet in the back seat won't kick out the cables. In other news, shocks and fuel lines will be here this week, so I can finish both of those mini-projects and then focus on finishing up the motor assy, and clutch replacement. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1426484379.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1426484394.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1426484406.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1426484417.jpg |
Jeff,
Looks really good. Do you still have the stock clock? I used a gauge plug from our host and drilled a concentric hole for the gauge in the plug. Pretty easy and clean if your looking for options down the road. That fan looks incredible. Did the air filter show up? Keep us posted. Will |

I just PM'd you earlier. Yes, I got the filter. It was ridiculously generous of you to send it and I cant thank you enough! Lunch is on me when we meet up this spring. You had better finish your car by then... |
These just arrived today. Original shocks rebuilt by Bilstein. Putting them in tonight!
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1426555355.jpg |
Jeff
I saw the PM but cannot respond in my phone. Glad it arrived and that it will be put to good use. There are a few threads on rerouting the lines that vented into the stock air box. As it relates to the crank vent, I think Paul summed it up well when he opined: "friends don't let friends vent to atmosphere".…that still cracks me up. Hope those shocks went in ok… |
Heh, I'm really glad ^that^ resonated with at least someone!
Catchcan FTW! Leave the resin in yer bong!!! What's the status update on your car's resurrection? Jeff, really nice work you're doing there... spring's coming - we'll have to meet up for a Northeastern'ers drive jah? There's efreakinnuff of us around here certainly!!! |

You are most welcome for the lesson, Paul! |
Shocks went in last night without too much drama. Next up is painting the tins.
Paul - definitely need to meet up once I have it running. So, can someone point me to some links to the process for replacing the airbox with the K&N filter? I know there are other hoses plugged in and want to figure this out before I put my motor in. I've seen some threads about it, but cant find any now! Any advice out there? |
^^^
Jeff, I did it this way - - crank case/oil tank vent "Y" hose attached to catch can - vent hose from fuel vapor, charcoal canister in right rear wheel well attached to catch can - catch can vented to atmosphere via a long hose running from the top of the can and out of the engine bay - hose follows the same path as the a/c refrigerant hoses on the right side. I then secured the end of the hose to the right rear swaybar mount with zip ties. The hose is pointed at the ground (tip just below the swaybar drop link - not THAT tip, Paul) and I cut it at a rearward facing angle in the hope of preventing air from easily rushing into it while driving. I did this because I did not want the vapor from the catch can vented into the engine bay. - WUR vented to atmosphere - although I like how some people have vented it to the top of the air filter, so I might do that at some point. |
Ronnie, the pedantic former teacher / current PED:
"friends do not let friends vent SANS CATCH CAN" how's that, yafukkindooooooooosh!? now, quit wasting mah fukkin time on the likes of yer uberdooshism - I'm a busy man afterall!: http://static.fjcdn.com/gifs/Lucky+b...94_5464513.gif |
^^^ Much morer betterer wording, Paul, and I would offer you some free candy as a reward, butt I can't errrrr ummmmm, spare any at this time!
|
Orient the WUR vent so rain/water doesn't get in....could screw up the WUR over time...ask me how I know
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1426623587.jpg |
Ummm, isn't that how a WUR is supposed to work? The Leask special? :D
|
Haaa...crazy thing is it ran pretty good even in this condition. Larry from flow tech got me a new one ....all better now.
|
Shocks mounted! Suspension is done!
New engine seal installed. New oil cooler seal installed. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1426696809.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1426696827.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1426696849.jpg |
Anyone know where this plugs in? I assume it is a brake pad wear indicator, but I can't see where to plug it in and can't find any pics showing where...
Do I need it? Both sides were unplugged already. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1426697120.jpg |
it should clip into the pad, if the pad has the slot to accept it (like Ronknees)
|
|
Installed my new AC condenser (Griffiths system) and repaired and repainted the condenser guard and mounted that up.
Got my fuel lines from Len today. Ordered a Hooligan muffler from Rarlyl8!! Cant wait to get it. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1426918219.jpg |
Good looking paintwork thar, Jeff. I also spy what looks to be a new, smaller than OEM out diameter, r134a compatible hose - nice (something I still want to do to my a/c system at some point - all new hoses).
Man, Griff is a great guy, and a hilarious poster in the 911 forums - have had some good times cutting up with him in the various, crazy a/c threads over there. :D |

I'm gonna have cold air this summer! Turns out, Charlie's shop is like 20 minutes from me, so I went there to pick it up and chatted with him for a while. Great guy! |
Got the three rear fuel lines installed last night. Didn't realize I need bushings for the tunnel lines, so I'm waiting until I get the bushings to do the tunnel and front lines.

Looking good. Keep the updates coming.
|
Started reassembling the motor. Alternator, fan, shroud, engine tins, electrical, etc.
Still lots to put back on. It's funny, because I took hundreds of pics pulling it apart, but yet I still keep finding things where I say "where does this go?" http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1427004685.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1427004706.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1427004718.jpg |
Jeff, you're killing it this winter! Super motivating. I just have to reinstall my headers, redo a cv boot, and adjust my valves and for some reason I walk out to the garage, flip the light on, look at the car for a minute and go back in the house. I've helped out on a few other cars lately but can't look at mine right now.
Thanks for the boost! |
