G50 starter wiring question

anyone know the wiring of the G50 starter? It is not the same as the 930. This has no terminal "tabs" but rather the post for batter and 2 small bolts. I'd hate to use the wrong one....

Thanks

Brendon

Are you asking what terminal on the solenoid is 12v and which is ground? If so, it doesn't matter, a solenoid will pull in regardless of polarity.

I have what looks to be 4 bungs on the starter. The big ones are obvious. Battery and starter. The other ones are smaller, maybe 1/4" ring connectors. One appears to be grounded already, but maybe not. I have 12V to the batter side of the starter and 12V to the top terminal and I get nothing....

Take a mulit-meter and check for continuity between each of the 1/4 terminals and the starter case. I'd be surprised if one is grounded already. But one of the small terminals has to be grounded and 12v to the other.

I have tried that. Wonder if my starter gave up the ghost in the past 4 years of sitting on a shelf.

I grounded the bottom terminal, 12v switched from the ignition (confirmed) and nothing. no click at all.

what I am looking at. Obviously I know where the battery cable goes and I have tested for 12v and it's good.

The purple is from the painless kit which goes to the ignition switch for start switched and the lower one with a small flat screw shows ground when tested with a meter and light. I have also tried grounding with a wire and terminal. No crank, no click.

Take the multi-meter and check for resistance between the two 1/4 terminals. If it's an open circuit the solenoid is shot.

Got it!!

It was the smaller terminal that gets 12v switched!

Thanks

Great, you wouldn't think it would go bad sitting on the shelf.

stranger yet, when I metered the small terminal. It showed ground. So logic would dictate NOT putting 12v to ground....

By small terminal you mean the one with the screwdriver slot in the pic, the one without the wire? You show continuity between that and the starter case? So now you have switched 12v on the slotted terminal and ground on the upper terminal?

no ground, just switched 12V+ to the slotted screw

So the other terminal has to be grounded internally to the starter case if the solenoid works. The slotted screw would also show continuity to ground thru the solenoid winding.

You would think so, but it didn't blow a fuse or short the switched 12v. Also it didn't meter ground.

I don't understand it but it works, that's all that matters. Sometimes I've tried to figure out why something does what it does to the point that it doesn't.
