building a 1500 awhp 8,750 rpm turbo motor

i was fortunate enough that one of my great friends and mentors was willing to do a collaboration on a project that i am currently working on. it is a 996tt widebody car that is still awd and is being widened 8" in the rear and 4" in the front. it has received suspension components from ERP and JRZ, a built trans and this motor and several carbon fiber parts.

I drove out to AZ to lean on my good friend John Bray at Evospec. he was kind enough to allow me to use his shop to assemble two motors in a matter of 3.5 days in his shop all while he and his amazing team did their thing. i could have done it at my shop, but when he hinted that i could come "hang out" with him while we both did our own thing i jumped at the opportunity!

the two motors i built while there were both over 1,000 hp. one was a 1250 awhp motor with his rods, pistons, 997 tt crank, custom headstuds, stage 1 heads and cams that was for a customer that bought a turbo that was supposedly built already. Although we soon found out that when people try to drill a case for bigger headstuds and assemble these motors in their garage bad things happen... like a bent rod, bent crank, blown head gasket and a cracked case!

the second motor is going in one of the shop cars and received all that evospec offers. their custom rods, custom pistons, 4.0l stroker crank, custom bearings, custom oil pump, custom headstuds, stage 3++ heads and cams with the valvetrain to rev safely to 8,750 rpms.

i was working diligently as to not wear out my welcome by getting in the way, or wasting too much time taking photos so there are not as many pics as i usually take to provide to customers for the above mentioned reasons and it is not a customer car.

i doubt this "custom cam" had anything do with why it was impossible to control one bank when we had it on the dyno...

this car came from a very well know forum member and was completely misrepresented to the new owner. really sad to be honest. the transmission that was supposedly "built" was so worn out that the only usable part was the case...

Not putting miles on your car is like not having sex with your girlfriend, so she'll be more desirable to her next boyfriend.

That rod tells you exactly why you never see the mention of an X beam in a discussion on the strongest racing rods.

i will post more pics later this week, but henry is right! which is why we went with the custom carrillo rods that are exclusive to Evospec for 1,000 wheel hp cars on both cars.

well when you attempt to drill your case with a hand drill to install larger diameter headstuds what you get are headstuds that are NOT perpendicular to the case. fasteners use friction to stay fastened. when you have a stud that is installed at an angle you have a limited amount of contact all focused on one side vs 360*. when i took the valve cover off 2-3 headstud nuts were no longer installed, 5-6 were hanging on by a few turns and the studs that had any torque left were anywhere from 45 ft lbs to 115 ft lbs.

obviously i was not involved in the assembly of this motor as the previous owner did it himself before selling it to my customer; therefore i do not know what kind of tq wrench was used, if one was even used at all.

the car made 1060 wheel hp and had way more but with the camshaft damaged we were unable to keep that bank manageable with the vario lift cams. to get the number we got we had to lock the cams down.

anyway, it is behind us now as we are waiting on the new trans to come back from CMS (the previous owner must not know that porscehe's are not drag cars!) to put it back together and retune.

3.6 race engines have been breaking the # 7 main webs for 20+ years. I ended up with a couple of POC race cases that looked the same....The casting will even crack where the reinforcement meets the outer case. Newer cases are redesigned for additional reinforcement.

the cases got shuffle pinned and boat-tailed. custom valves. custom oil pump. coated pistons and bearings. and case and heads machined, not hand drilled, for bigger evospec headstuds.
