Simple Green Pro HD 3:1 with water in my parts washer removed the carbon on the tops of my CIS pistons without affecting the skirt coating. Needs a few minutes soak time and some agitation but works really well.

In my parts washer I use PSC 1000. It's available at Tractor Supply if you have one nearby. It works well in the parts washer and has less odor than mineral spirits. $54 for 5gal.
