What's the schedule for oil change and valve adjustment?
I just bought a '90 C2 61K that was resealed along with new rings (not new cyl. and pistons). It's has just over 4K in miles since the reassembly of the engine. What is the timeline for oil changes that should have occurred and when should the valves be adjusted (or should have been since the reassembly)? Thanks.
p.s. I didn’t buy the book because I didn’t do the rebuild. Also, my engine oil is green. Last edited by devo230; 06-08-2004 at 06:11 AM.. |

When you first start the engine you use non-detergent oil for some 30 minutes of run and break-in time, then change the filter and use normal oil. After about 500 to 1000 miles change the oil again and do a valve adjust. After that the usual 3000 miles interval for oil and 15000 miles for valve adjustments.
The green color is when light gets reflected from the oil. When you look at it in transmission mode (put the oil in a glass jar) it'll look yellowish. Whoever had the reseal done should know when and what was done to the car since I would imagine. Ingo

Thanks for the help. I'm trying to get in contact with the seller of the car that I bought .. actually, he's trying to get in touch with the mechanic. Regarding the oil color, I siphoned about a quart out after over filling. The siphon tube is clear. The oil that I added came out golden in color, but then I picked up the existing oil ... it is definitely green. I don't know if the valves have been adjusted and if I should change the oil ASAP. Someone thought that it might be Kendall GT-1 oil (green) or oil with a green dye added to check for leaks.
Should I trust what the seller says about the valve adjustment after the break-in or should I get them adjusted now. Or, does it really matter a lot. Maybe I could wait for 15K. The engine sounds fine. The valves don't sound tight. I'd expect that loose isn't good either. |
