I have just finished a six month R&R project on my '76 930. When starting up for the first time, the engine goes to about 4K RPM. I switched off the engine right away. I have checked the throttle linkage and adjusted it, it seems to be in the right range. I am wondering what I should be looking for / at next.
Thanks in adavnce!!

It's probably your auxiliary air regulator. The early Turbos had a faster high idle than non-Turbos. You could either adjust the existing one, or swap it out for an SC unit.

It could also be a vacuum leak.

Is the butterfly tight in the throttle body? Is the hand throttle on or misadjusted?
4K seems high for sensor type problems.

It is the throttle linkage! I detached at the link on the trany and the car started, and idled normally. So when I play with the linkage between the trany and the accel pedel, I get full motion (and visa versa from the engine). But when I join the pedel linkage and the engine linkage at the trany, there seems to be 1 to 1 1/2 inches of travel I must take out of the pedel linkage for them to connect. I also seem to have run out the adjustment too. Do you think the issue is at the hand throttle?

The CFO says to get rid of it. I dearly love the car, but I only drive it 6-10 times per year. On the day when it pulls out of the driveway (or goes into a car hauler) I will probably shed tears.

I got to question the masculinity of a man who would choose a boxter over a 930 and then claim his wife made him do it.

Incorrectly setting the timing (heck, it's always a guess at rebuild time) can cause the engine to race as well (too much advance). Timing the distributor right away is not necessarily a bad idea...
