piston squirter idea
Hey guys, I've been searching this forum high and low for a definitive answer to my question, and have come up empty handed.
Has anyone tried using a cut off bicycle derailleur cable chucked into a low-speed drill to clean stuck piston squirters? (then go back to Wayne's pressure method to clear the squirters of any dislodged poo) Is there any reason I should NOT try this? I'm happy to admit that I'm a little wet behind the ears where it comes to this Porsche engine rebuild stuff... Thanks for your input... Curt

Most cases its not dirt but a bad seat where the steel ball sits, they are alum and there is a spring in there that a wire is going to mess up.

I am thinking this could damage the squirter. The squirters I've held in the past had alumnium bodies. A cable could score the inside of the squirter ...

I was actually thinking of going in through the inside of the oil passage that feeds the back side of the squirter- I've read a few threads where folks have used safety wire with a hook bent in the end in conjunction with a drill (can't recall the thread though) and that's what sparked my cable idea- I ran out of safety wire, but I have lots of derailluer cable on hand!
I thought about simply replacing the squirters, but I can only find squirters for the '78 and on applications- are they the same as the one's used in the 7R case? in looking around to respond to this thread, I did find this thread from ZOA NOM that may be a good alternative, so I'll try that first since PB Blaster isn't doing much for me so far...

I haven't read all the other threads, so please pardon me if I'm stating the obvious here ... but how are you hitting the squirter with pressurized air? I recall that I had to block off an oil passage by inserting some fuel hose into the through bolt hole closest to my sticky squirter. From memory, I think this blocked one of the side oil galleys, and then I may have had to plug the fuel hose ID too. Then all the pressurized air that I put into the other end of the through bolt hole went straight to the squirter.

I managed to clear the squirters to 4, 5 and 6 with a process similar to what ChrisBennet describes here- it figures that I'm struggling with the side that's supposed to be the easy side, eh? :-)
My problem has been with the 1-2-3 squirters that seemingly offer a straight-shot to the squirters (though I have managed to free the #3 squirter now)... my rubber air nozzle tip is too fat to get into the passageway directly, so I think I'll head down to Home Depot to see if I can find a rubber stopper that might close off the spigot side of the through-bolt hole... then it may be time to resort to the Sea Foam... You guys have probably saved me from screwing things up even worse- thank you! Curt

Hah! Got 'em, but only after making another run to Harbor Freight for some alternative air nozzles and a side trip to the local auto-supply store for some Sea Foam. I also used a bit of electric fencing wire to gingerly poke around just a bit- the remaining squirters let out an indignant pop, now they all seem to work fine.

Stomskiracing makes a handy tool for blowing out the squirters. I'd be careful about sticking wires in there.

I had heard that Stomski made a tool for just my problem, and I was considering that tool when my ADHD tendencies got the best of me- I was very cautious with the wire and didn't spend more than a few seconds with it on each of the two stuck squirters. Since I've gotten them unstuck, I've continued to flood all of the squirters with carb cleaner and hit them with the air a few times- the resistance seems to be pretty consistent across all squirters (both those that I "coaxed" and those that I didn't)
But I think your warning about forcing wire in there is well founded (thank you for it)- I think nicking or scoring the ball in that check valve could be a bad thing. Curt

Does anybody ahve a picture of a squirter uninstalled or a cutaway view? I went through the same thing as Curt about a month ago. A pic of what they look like would sure be nice FYI.
