I can't tell from the picture. If there is a steel helicoil or other steel insert, you should be fine. If the studs look like they are in the bare magnesium, you'll be taking a chance if you don't put the casesavers in.

Finally Sealing up the Long Block

Work has recently been really getting in the way of my project here, but I have made some progress and am getting closer to the finish line. Just thought I'd throw up some before and after shots. I'm sooo excited to get this baby up and running.

I was waiting on some CIS components, so I decided to pretty up my valve covers.

Out with the old...

And in with the new...

Next step is to buck up and buy some SSI's. But for now, I'm going to finish rebuilding the CIS and getting the fuel system sorted. I've searched around on here for some CIS rebuild threads, but haven't been able to find anything very detailed. If anybody knows of a good one, please toss a link into this thread, I would really appreciate a kinda reference guide for sorting out the CIS.

CIS rebuild

Alex:

That is a very sharp looking long block. Your work will pay dividends in the future, and you would really make grandfather proud. I also really like the color. Period correct!

I am NO expert - but - the topic: a CIS rebuild - this is a place I have been going through in the last few months. Keep in mind that I am working on a 79SC, which differs from your car.

I recommend that since you've gone this far, you should go the next mile and start with servicing the injectors. Another member recommended https://www.injector.com/
and this is where I sent mine. They serviced the set of 6 for a reasonable price for me. One was stuck open (broken spring) on the project I am working on, so they sold me a rebuilt one.

Next in line MAY be fuel lines from and to the fuel distribution unit. If there are cracks in these hoses, all of this time invested will be lost with one small engine fire.

Next in the CIS system is going to be all of the vaccum lines. Since it's been a little while since this ride has been in action, I recommend that every rubber (cloth covered) line is replaced with new. Brace yourself, you are going to have to do a lot of work finding the parts on the PET system for this - and it took me a while to get all of the parts from our host. Resist the urge to go to A-zone to get these hoses. You will not find the metric lines Porsche used.

Finally - it sounds like the airbox is in decent shape; but you may want to replace all of the rubber mounts that connect the airbox to the block. They're cheap, and it will be easy to do at this point.

IF I were to make a suggestion to our host that they may do well on: a CIS rebuild kit for the specific model/year - it may be helpful for those less experienced in putting these things back together.

Best of luck!

CIS Refresh

@Robey5 - Thanks for the compliments and the advice. I'm one of those complete OCD guys so I've been really taking my time with the cleanup and rebuild of this engine. I have been trying to figure out how to sort out my injectors, but I like the idea of just sending them out to be professionally overhauled. And yeah, I am currently just taking apart the whole CIS unit to replace all of the washers and rusty banjo bolts, as well as all the fuel lines, vacuum hoses and oil lines. The one component that still looked ok was the wiring harness, although I am going to upgrade my distributor wires and probably upgrade my alternator to power better headlights and a small sound system (I would be happy to just listen to this beautiful engine, but I want to be able to entertain the girlfriend on those long roadtrips). I am pretty sure that I have all of the old fuel/vacuum hoses so I can get the correct lengths, but I am planning to source them from Pelican...I've tried getting stuff locally to frustrating results in the past. Thanks again for the advice. I am hoping to have this baby purring by the end of July.

Update time

After several months of tedious scrubbing, cleaning, and sorting out the electrical and fuel systems, the engine is finally coming together. I mocked up some of the components today just to make sure that everything will fit and look good. Check it out. I can't wait to plug this baby back into her nice clean engine compartment.
Also, while waiting for parts, I took it upon myself to sexify the airbox cover while simultaneously giving my baby a less restrictive intake.

This project keeps dragging out, I just am way too ocd about having everything perfect...I guess it will pay off in the end.

Second the slippery slope notion. I started with Grandpa's 911 T and now have 911, 914, 944 and am building a bigger engine for 914

Welcome to a whole new world ALEX!!!!
