Timing of intermediate shaft?

I'm rebuilding a 2.7 and just got the case back from the machine shop.

I'll probably have 1000 questions before I'll have it back together...

First question:
How to time the intermideate shaft?
There is a timing mark on the aluminium sprocket...


I got the Porsche workshop manual (pdf) but it does not say anything bout this subject.

There is no timing for that, the cams are timed independently at the sprockets.

We are lucky and fortunate to have guys like Mike B. in this forum. He has saved me many times from disaster in several engine rebuilds that I've done in the past. I've done a few last year and 2 this year, and still asking questions from these guys. It is a never ending cycle and the more you get involve in engine rebuilding the more questions come to mind. Mike B. and Bruce A. both from the south east are my 'help desk' connections and a few others. You are in good company.

BTW...the mark you see on the sprockets (big and small) are the size marks.
There are either 0 or 1 marked on them because Porsche made two sizes (only 2 I think) ... and they should match.

Actually there are 4 possible combinations for the 0 and 1 gears and 3 of the 4 are acceptable for each case, depending if it's a 1 or a 0 case.

I love this site...as Andy pointed out...the possible combinations of the gears.
If there is any knowledge out there that will solve a problem..it is given freely and quickly in most cases.
How did we ever do it in the old days?....LOL

I just took a motor apart that was rebuilt many years ago, ad I'm sure if you seen it it would answer your question. Allot of motors were assembled incorrectly or poorly.

I'm not sure how important backlash is on these motors. Its not likely your going to have to little, and if you have to much what are you going to do?

I'm guessig oil pump. Now that you brought it up he was probably talking about the backlash in the IMS gears. I was thinking crankshaft end play n my last reply. There is a spec for the backlash on IMS gears. I think it involves putting a pin of a specified size between the gears. I think its discussed in the factory manuals, Vol #1.

Not to be a smart ass, but why not let Buggy answer the question directed to him.
Of course he is talking about the oil pump, the question is why is he doing it. It has nothing to do with the intermediate shaft question.
