engine drop on 911SC Targa
 

I'm sorry to create yet another thread on a topic that has been covered so much but this will be my first engine drop and....

I have to drop the engine in my '82 911 SC Targa and my question is what is the best way to get the rear of the car high enough to drop the engine: With a Targa is it better to jack it up from the side factory jack points (a little at a time) or from the rear (crankcase)?

Despite the warnings many of you successfully jack the car up from the crankcase and I found one thread where the owner created a nice wood adapter:

In the past I have jacked the car up from the factory side point a little at a time but never to the height required to drop an engine. I want to use this neat wood block system (another Pelican) for supporting the car:

but jacking the car up to this height from the side concerns me. Maybe I'm worrying for nothing and but it is not a coupe. I have an AC Hydraulic DK13HLQ 2800lb Floor Jack that goes up to 28", an engine hoist, and I'll remove the bumper if necessary, but I would appreciate any advice on the best approach for this car. Thanks!

I had great luck with no drama using the small-drop method: drop the engine onto a dolly with the car low to the ground, then jack the car up side-to-side until the engine can be rolled out. I did this single-handed and there was never a moment of instability or lack of control.

The u-shaped base of my engine stand made the perfect dolly to drop the engine on to as well. I hope this helps!

Another way is to use a Motocycle Jack with platform extension and 1 x 18 x 24 piece of plank and basically raise from three points, engine, and HE's. Postioned forward to balance the gearbox and engine.

I personally like to remove the bumper to aid in the clearance.

For my drop I used a scrap of 2 x 6 cut to fit the width of the pan at the back edge.

Thor; I'm trying to see exactly where you place the 2x6. Is it across the pan where the factory recommended jack points are? Like here:

If so, does it sit on the welded seams or inboard of them?

Yes...across the pan at area D in the red box. Placed right behind the edge of the pan. No risk of pan damage when using 2x6. Thor
