My dad was born in 1930 in the "packing town" part of OKC. He was born and grew up in a small house that was not much nicer than my storage building. No electricity, the only water was a hand pump in the street that several neighbors shared. They did have their own private privy behind the house. He was amazed when they moved into a "modern" house with indoor plumbing and electricity in 1941. His parents did not have air conditioning until the mid 60s and dad had long ago left home to get married and join the Air Force. I remember visiting that house and of course we did not have air conditioning either.
We did not have a house with AC until 1971 (Montgomery, Alabama) and the base kept a padlock on the compressor until it was over 90 for several days. I can remember making a promise to myself that someday I will have a house that has central AC and I can keep it as cool as I want, whenever I want. I did that in 1980. I ain't ever going back! Well, my wife won't let me keep it that cool always, but it is never HOT in my house.
