Got A/C installed when I was 12. Until then we had an attic fan. The house was insulated horribly. When moved to current 1800sqft the electric and heating bills were the same as the old 900sqft.
Grandparents lived in a house that was 2 blocks off main street that the bathroom was an added on part of the back porch. Had an Aunt and Uncle that lived on a farm way out in the country that their bathroom was also a walled in converted part of the back porch.
The weirdest bathroom I've ever used was at my oldest neice's. Her and her husband owned and ran the Funeral Home in Rolla MO. They lived in a house that was part of the funeral parlor. The bathroom was 16x16 and all it had in it was a claw foot tub, toilet, and a pedestal sink each in a different corner of the room. It was huge with basically nothing in it. Felt and sounded like you were going in the middle of the living room. Felt more conspicuous than going to the bathroom in the drunk tank.
