Growing up, my family did not have AC in a house until we moved to Texas in 1967. And only used that when it really got hot and humid. After I was born, we moved from Wisconsin to Tucson to Okinawa and the Philippines. Off base at Clark on Luzon was really brutal at times without it. In Fairbanks, Alaska and New Hampshire was not a problem. On Guam it would have been nice but nights were cool enough without it. When my folks retired and move to a very rural plot of land in central Texas, they never had it. They slept on the screened porch in the summer. After they passed away and my brothers and I took over, the window units went in real fast. We now use the property as our weekend retreat and all meet up there for Thanksgiving, New Years and Easter. Sometimes 4th of July too. Still not enough AC equipped bedrooms so we rotate who gets to sleep on the porch in hot weather.
