We did the same thing before we had it installed. Window units upstairs and the portable one down. It worked pretty good but the noise was a little much. I had gotten a nice bonus in 2013 and that was our big purchase for the year. Of course, it turned out our furnace was ready for the scrap heap although it still worked ok. We ended up getting the air AND a new furnace. yay.
A month later we got hit with a huge storm with tress down and hail damage. A big trees fell where the condenser is located but the branches landed on either side of it with no damage.
