I think it's more of an expectation thing - a prospective employer these days is probably more concerned about someone with no online presence at all. While I utterly despise so-called "social media" and have not / will not ever have a Facebook, Myspace, instrgram, etc. account, I do have a LinkedIn one mostly because I know I'm relocating / changing jobs soon and I want prospective employers to know I'm not BS-ing them when I talk about what I've done, who I've worked with, etc.
It's sort of a necessary evil these days. I simply ignore the invite requests from people I have no idea who they are (mostly headhunters and scammers I figure). I don't have time for their nonsense / sales pitches. I just want to show that I am essentially who I present myself to be in a traditional interview upon later scrutiny / research.
