The Police IT department is afraid their network will get hacked if they allow any access. And I imagine with good reason. Wouldn't think the department's employees are any more tech savvy than anywhere else.
Know if I was still in charge of network security at the company I work, security would be much tighter than it is. Actually, when I was in charge of network security, it was much tighter. Had hackers I knew try to get in to check security and were dumbfounded that they couldn't get in. Was using "non-entrprise" hardware and software they had no idea how to hack. Now company is using std Cisco stuff that has to be patched all the time.
