Back in the old days!
I made the drive from Montgomery, Alabama to Oklahoma City in one drive. It was 888 miles from house to house. I did not have an air conditioned car and I always did the drive in summer. I usually left in the evening and just drove all night to not die from heat stroke. I did that round trip trip at least once in my 1973 VW bug and many times in the 914.
When I decided to leave Alabama for good and look for a new job I gave my two weeks notice, and worked for the last Friday. On Saturday I jumped in the 914 and drove up to OKC and stayed with my grandparents. I looked for a job in the Sunday paper and on Monday drove over and got a job by 9:00 AM. I hung around in OKC looking for an apartment and found a place on Tuesday. Wednesday was the 4th of July and I stuck around to celebrate with the relatives.
On Thursday I drove 888 miles home. I hooked a small trailer to the 914 and headed to OKC and moved into my new slum $90 per month furnish apartment pit of an apartment.
I used all my available cash and even some credit on the credit card to pay for the move and the utilities hookup. I lived on $4 per week for food for a while.
The single biggest reason I moved to OKC was I felt real sure I could go hang out at the grandparents house around dinner time and they would invite me to eat with them.
I was at work in the new job on Monday with just 4 working days of unemployment.
