Actually the A/C on my 914 didn't use hardly any of the front trunk. You could even still carry the spare under the cover. The only thing in the front was the condenser and a fan. It was really thin and built into the bottom of the trunk in a cut-out that was sealed with that rubbery tar stuff and painted the same as the rest of the body seams. The spare tire mount was part of the thing as it replaced the floor of the front trunk. The fan was a squirrel cage fan about 1 inch diameter and as wide as the bottom of the trunk. You had to access that stuff from both the top and bottom. I know cause I rebuilt the fan bearings so it would work better sitting in traffic with very hot pavement. It pulled the air from under the front of the car to run over the condenser (also very thin height wise).
