This is a great "solution" (in quotes because, obviously, most traffic agencies don't consider there's a problem to solve.)
What I've noticed is there are different responses by the signal to the button push. At some intersections, the button does nothing more than activate the "Walk" sign once the signal goes through its
regular timing cycle for the green light. In other words, failure to push the button results in a green light for traffic but no "Walk" command. At these types of intersections, peds tend to continually push the button because nothing seems to be happening as they wait for the cycle to complete.
At other intersections, I've witnessed the button
change the cycle of the signal and the green for traffic, along with the "Walk" sign,
appear sooner than the normal timing of the signal. At these intersections, peds tend to push once because they can see a result of the push within a few seconds.
Regardless of the type of intersection, I often see someone push the button, step aside a bit, and another person
who has witnessed the pushing steps up and pushes it himself. Sort of saying, "Hey bud, I don't trust that you pushed the button correctly."
