You are going to find the opinions just offered the same accross the two boards you've asked this question of.

There is no magic bullet for a beat up 944. If you want a hobby car buy it. But don't spend over $1,000 as you are going to be putting at least $2,000 into it to get it back on the road.

I think the investment in time and money to keep a 944 out of the junk yard well worth it. Then I've been spoiled by a 944 for almost 20 years.
