I looked at a 700 last year and didn't like the fit and finish. The 783 is one of the first guns out of the new Kentucky manufacturing facility and it appears Remington is doing a good job.
As to the stock this one will be used for pushing bush and all the other fun things associated with hunting. With a wood stock you can refinish it. A synthetic you replace it. I'll let the next owner worry about it.
