I would recommend a original 3.2 Carrera coupe for a classic air-cooled experience. Should be able to find a clean 84-86 driver in the mid to upper $30s. SC's are great also and go for a little less.
Good 964 C2 Coupes (5spd) are fetching $50k plus. Anything in the $30k range will need allot of work or the seller is really uninformed.
The 996TT are great cars. Complete different animal than the air-cooled cars. Should be able to find a clean 6spd coupe driver for around $40k.
Do your research and drive a bunch of vehicles. Targas and Convertibles are less expensive than coupes and are great fun also. Stay away from heavily modded cars and make sure to do a through PPI at a reputable shop before you purchase any older Porsche. Don't get hung up on mileage too much. Maintenance history is very important.
