Go to houzz.com. Use the search functions to narrow down on rooms and styles you like. Look at a few hundred photos. See if you can find examples of styles that both of you like. If you can't get at least this far, any time you spend with a designer (freelance or store) will be wasted.
Don't get fixated on the individual pieces, just focus on what you like the look of and what would feel like home.
