It was miserable picking it too. Had to wear long sleeve shirts and gloves and it still sometimes got itchy.
Don't know why but it seemed to be the only thing I could grow that people and the grocery store would buy all I could grow. The grocery store manager was always excited to see me coming with my bags of fresh picked okra.
Picked the pods when they were from 3 to 4 inches long, young and tender. And had to pick every other day. Usually got between a half bushel and a bushel. Thats a LOT of freakin okra.
My Mom did a great job of rolling it in corn meal and frying it in bacon grease until it was really crisp and there wasn't any slimey left. But I still didn't like it.
