when it comes to getting estimates get it in writing !
then a estimate is what it states it is ! estimates are not a firm price it's a estimate of about the cost to do what the customer is looking for .
when a customer has a shop look at the car the shop owner or service writer can't see what is under the finish any better then you can .
when it comes to paint costs and paint labor at times they are left open this is done because of the customer is on the fence about color or type and even quality of the coatings he wants to go with .
if you and the shop talked about it then i don't know why paint would have been ? unless things like jams may or may not have been talked about .
so it's shame on you for not getting a estimate in writing !
it's shame on the shop for not also giving you a estimate in writing !
on many jobs we bring down to bare metal the 1st estimate is just for that nothing else . it's to remove all needed parts and strip the finish and spray one coat of a E type primer . nothing else !
then the customer comes back and both parties (car owner and service writer) go over the car so both parties know the condition of the car and what they are dealing with for repairs .
at that time if the customer knows what type of finish they are looking for it will be added into the estimate . if the customer is unsure of the things like color paint type and quality it is left open but clearly stated on the estimate .
there is also one other thing customers should know . at times some customers will come and look at there car a few times a week . they come and hang out stopping production on there car by talking to the tech working on the car . this is a big NO NO ! 1st your not paying for the added time your holding up production on your car . you coming to make love to your car in a shop was not part of a estimate !
