He is a 3rd generation funeral director. Family owns what was one of the only black funeral homes in the area.
He dropped out of college to help with the family business due to his father's health.
If I understand it correctly they also used their hearses to provide ambulance service for the black community until 1972 because the ambulance services would not go there.
Recently went back and finished his degree because to serve a huge part of the black community here in OKC you need to be a member of the correct fraternity and you have to have a college degree to remain in the fraternity. When I congratulated him on getting his degree, he just laughed and said, it's just business.
Have another friend I met in the Apple computer club in the 80's. The fraternity brothers helped set him up with a print shop printing just about all the funeral programs for the black community. Interesting occupation for a masters in physics. He's still involved in the fraternity on the national level. It is kind of interesting, after I go visit him at his print shop I noticed for the next month or so black people I don't know will smile and wave at me while I'm out an about.
