I was recently in a similar dilemma. Engine lost power. I eventually found out it was a broken valve spring and could have been a lot worse. Regardless it was a $4,500 repair to a 2001 Boxster S with 91,000 km on it. The car is probably worth about $14,000 in Canada. I considered selling it as "roller", especially if the bill was going to head much closer to $10,000. In the end, the wallet hurts a bit but I'm glad I spent the $ and have the Boxster S back out on Sundays to get my wife and I on to coffee shop tours! It's a love/hate relationship with my Boxster S with love still dominating.. I'd lean 51% in favour of repairing your current boxster.
