Even of you never wear a suit, you should still have a few sport jackets and dress slacks. I wear those to restaurants, parties, fundraisers, the opera or symphony, museum and gallery openings... the list of suitable occasions is long.

As for the 60's suits, if you buy a modern suit and intend to look like a 60's ad executive... whatever you do, don't let the tailor cut the suit so tight. Europeans have always worn tighter fits but the current trend is to fit it so tight it looks like the wrong size. Apart from being uncomfortable, you'll look like your tailor was a blind man.
