That certainly is not true, but the failure rate is much lower for the double row.
Each bearing in the double row is larger than the bearing in the single row.
If you search, you can find data, but both do fail.
FWIW, the failure is usually due to the failure of the seal, allowing the factory lube to wash out and eventually the bearings fail as there is not a pressurized oil source at the bearing.
By the way, all the above is pertinent to the Boxster also as they share the same engine family.
