Many states don't transfer the S brand from one state to another. Sketchy people have used that to wash titles for decades so the stigma of a branded title comes off the car. Doesn't mean they don't legally own it. Just means they are trying to hide the history.
If you immediately pass on any car with history because of concerns that's your personal choice. I won't judge that. Myself, and many others are still prospective buyers for these cars. Lots of US S title cars have gone back to Europe without the buyer caring. Just be sure the car is what it says it is and is legally owned.

What many people don't realize is that until the last 20 years or so it was very easy in MANY states to retitle a stolen car. In the 1960's and '70's it was very common for people to take a stolen car to someplace like Alabama, Oklahoma and probably 30 other states and get a title.
It's not having a branded title that's the issue...it's the issue that it may have been stolen and retitled. The original owner (or insurance) can come get it and you're out a LOT of money. Best to have any car that old run through the stolen car database
