Nobody suggested it. When I said something about getting timers for my garage and porch lights and how I would save a whole $12 annually for each bulb by using a $20 timer switch...Nobody suggested just NOT turning the garage and porch lights on unless someone actually showed up!!! That would make an estimated additional $7 savings per year per bulb without having to spend the $20 in the first place. Just leaving them off would save me $57 a year!

More than half the houses in my neighborhood turn on any outside lights at night.

I thinking the optimal solution would be a motion sensor that turned on the garage and porch light set so it only turned them on if someone actually pulled into the driveway when it is dark out.

I'm thinking this asks enough questions to explore a whole house automation system and what I might be able to do with it and what it might save.
