Garage
Is your water heater in the garage? Mine is. We have it set fairly low, just above vacation mode.

With just the two of us there most of the time we have never run out of hot water. In the middle of summer the "cold" water coming into the house is pretty warm. In the dead of winter the cold water can be down to 40 degrees. That takes a lot more gas to heat up.

Between the aquarium inside, the Koi pond in the back yard, the Tivo DVR and security system DVR always on and running we never can get the electric bill very low.

We have gas five burner stove top and gas oven but those only get turned on about twice per year. The water heater is gas but it does not have a pilot light that is on all the time. It has an electric sparker system so no gas usage except when it fires up. The furnace has no pilot light either.
