I say go for the Jazz, but her metal friends won't think it's legit.
Ibanez basses are decent. They tend to be smaller, thinner, and lighter, which is a plus. I've had two (or three?), but eventually got rid of them in favor of beefier necks. I had neck stability issues with all of them, but the temps and humidity in my house are all over the place during the year.
Whatever she gets make sure she has the opportunity to play the exact bass she'll be getting first.
