Printing these days is almost always done from a press ready PDF.
Some people still send natives files, Indesign / Quark, but print houses don't like them anymore. They prefer PDF because all the work has been done. I always hate when you send a printer a PDF and all they do is rename it and send back to you as the digital "proof" for you to approve.
Anyway, back to the point, Press ready PDF's are pretty much fully editable. Couple of clicks and you've got everything you need to roll any common e-book format.
Agree it's unlikely that was done.
