I thought the same until a "friend of a friend" (really) had one go at around the same mileage. I told my friend to tell him to swap it, but he laughed and said it was the most reliable car he had ever owned, just put gas in it and change the oil every few years (he was a non car guy) - that didn't work out too well for him (997.1).

Porsche really screwed up on some of these, I'm not sure if anybody knows the exact issues (why some fail at low mileage but most don't). One of my engineer friends thought it was because the bearings were installed improperly at the factory (slightly off center), and that is why most failed at such low mileage. I think the failure rate was estimated at 13% or so. I have heard of a few at 50k+ miles.

Sorry about your loss, I really hate these stories. If you really liked the car I would try to save it, Porsche should step up and sell replacement engines at cost to owners when the IMS let go - I don't care how many years later, that's crap engineering somewhere, 13% is unaccepteble...
