Perhaps women are just catching up with men. Drinking to excess is more common than many think.
My wife used to work in an ICU as a nurse. A patient's stay there may be several days or longer and of course there is no drinking. After just a couple of days lots of patients who would otherwise claim not to be drinkers or only occasional drinkers were going through the DTs. She'd say the numbers were very eye opening.
A lot of us here on the board probably work with quite a few alcoholics and don't even realize it (nor do the drinkers realize it).
