Anybody know 2005 Honda Odyssey transmissions?

My niece was driving back from Texas and as they went over the Arbuckle Mtns the transmission started slipping so bad it wouldn't go any more. My brother went down and they put tranny juice in it and it was completely empty, took almost 4 qts! It had had time to cool so they tried it and were able to drive home to here in OKC. Said it acted like it was slipping a little a couple of times so they dropped it at a local garage. Mechanic says it needs a new tranny for $3800.

Brother said he googled and they claim when the tranny gets hot it actually boils fluid out the air breather for the transmission.

Would you put a new/rebuilt tranny in,
or replace the fluid and filter and see how it goes,
or would you just sell it and try to find a more reliable vehicle?

Think brother is leaning towards the last option.

Too bad it didn't happen a couple of weeks sooner, they could have bought my Cayenne S.
