The Last Days of Night, by Graham Moore.
Only his 2nd novel, but I like his style.
Revolves around the 1880's in NYC and the real-life battle between Thomas Edison, George Westinghouse, Nicholas Tesla, and a host of others for the rights to electrify the city.

PS: Sam Posey fans might enjoy his model train book - about the lay-out he (and his son) built in their Connecticut farmhouse.
