Happy Weekend.
Have a missed opportunity story as well. Dropped my first 944 Turbo off at my mechanics. A guy there was a fresh transfer in the Air Force that had brought his 930. It was at the shop getting a quote to put it back together and fix. He had it at a shop in Houston that was ripping him off and kept charging him but never got it fixed and the motor was currently in a box. The interior was immaculate and the whole thing had just had a complete everything off repaint, Guards Red. He had just gotten a quote to fix it or $4000 stock $5000 hot rod. And just learned the original problem was a simple $100 fix and the shop he had it in had been working on it for 2 years and charged him $8K so far was going the charge another $8K to put it back together. He was fed up and sold it to the guy just ahead of me by 10 minutes for $5000. All put together and running they were worth about $28K at the time.
Got to thinking about it and called to make an offer to the guy that had bought it for $5000. A guy that came in just after I left had already got it from him for $7K. Contacted that guy and offered up to $14K as is, but he was a notorious local 911 parts guy and saddly parted it out. Evidently in the hour between when he bought it and I called him he had already sold some of the parts off it.
Guess it just wasn't in the cards for me to have a 930.
My only consolation was I ended up beating everyone including 930s at the autocrosses with my 944 Turbo by a significant time. In fact, when I got my first 928 had both for a while and took both to autocrosses and got FTD with the 944 Turbo and 2nd with the 928 two seconds slower. Don't know what would have happened with the 930, but bet I would have been fast as I would have had the mechanic do the hot rod option putting the motor back together AND done all the suspension mods like we did the 944 Turbo to make it fast.
At the time I couldn't afford both cars so put both the 928 and the 944 Turbo up for sale and sold the one that got my asking price first. The 944 Turbo went for $15K. I had bought it 4 years earlier for $13K. Had bought the 928 GT for $23K and sold it a year and a half later for $27K after getting a brand spanking new 2001 Boxster S. The sticker was $56K and only paid $42K. They only offered me $9K for my 928 and I threatened to walk out. They took the $9K off the price without taking the trade in and I made them take some more off for the insult.
