I actually have to dress up now and then - which is fun on occasion only. Here is a picture of my wife and I at the recent wedding of our niece. Fun evening out.
That said with the money I spent recently on a suit and the outfit pictured I should have hit up one of your thrift shops. Until this wedding event I have not spent money on dress clothes for 10+ years. Life in SoCal

Brown shoes REALLY?
Yes you could of bought some really nice QUALITY stuff at a Thrift for the cost of the shirt.
QUALITY COSTS MONEY...except when you find it at a Thrift.
For instance Zanella Italian wool slacks are exceptional quality and they are reasonably expensive at $300 up. Quality cloths also fit better as they don't scrimp in the cutting of and quality of the material. Further the attention to detail in the fit and finish is exceptional. You look and feel better in Zanella's than in Haggars.
To be honest most people dress like bums.
Dressing well does not necessarily mean dressing up, you can dress up or you can dress down to the grunge...but the key is to do it well, that means paying attention to detail and colours.
Women notice how you dress.
