Actually in some states you can get a new vin for the replica of your choice (cobra etc) indicating the year of car you are replicating.

An,d I use to know of one British car shop that sold rebooked cars. THey didn't;t swap the vin, just keep the one section of the body that held the vin form your donor, and built the shell around that.

COincidentally that was the one part of that car least susceptible to corrosion and most likely to have survived.
