When I was in college dated a girl who drove a pinto. Her dad was a sheriff and put a governor on it so I wouldn't go over 40mph to try to keep her from leaving town. It didn't work. All it did was put her in a dangerous position on the roads no able to go over 40mph. Especially in a PINTO!

Friend a work and his son did the father and son car thing. They did an old Firebird convertible. Made it a really nice hot rod with every option. It was really really nice. They did a fantastic job completely rebuilding the whole car including painting it themselves and doing the upholstery. About 2 months after they finished it his son sold it and got a cheap old beat up Chevy Chevette.

The norm that I have seen is the kids that earned the money to buy their own cars took much better care of them and the kids who's parents gave them cars usually ended up totaling the cars. There are exceptions to every rule, but has just been my observation. My Dad helped me. I had to pay for them, but he made it easy for me to earn the money (as long as I was willing to work) AND helped me get a good deal. Still ended up having two wrecks in my first car. One was not my fault, the girl came from a side street across three lanes onto a main 4 lane street to broad side me and I was in traffic with no place to go to get out of her way. The other I hit a parked car driving down a residential street at night because I was distracted by a woman dancing naked on her front porch.
