I finally got around to test driving a 996 for the first time. I was really curious about how it would be to drive.
My first 911 was an SC targa then I upgraded to a 964 coupe.
Most recently I drove a 993 Targa and a 997 with PDK, neither of which I particularly enjoyed. The 993 felt heavy and the steering and suspension was both soft and had too much weight behind it.
The 997 was very luxurious and fast but the PDK was just too easy, I didn't feel involved with the driving experience.
The 996 felt somewhere in the middle of the two, which makes perfect sense.
The controls were very nice, the clutch and shifter felt great. The steering was good, though the steering wheel felt too big.
The interior is nothing special but the seating position was great.
So I was happily surprised in how enjoyable it was to drive, but I didn't love this particular 996. Silver and black is just so mundane, and this car also has some electrical issues that the dealer blamed on a bad battery, but I think could be the alternator. The car can only be started with a booster and the gauges were a little funky. They had to replace the fuel pump recently too. I think it has been sitting for a while.
For now the hunt for a 996 is on the back burner especially since our DailyDriver VW needs to be replaced sooner than later.
But, I still want another 911 and the 996 is the only affordable option.
