I just fixed a simliar problem on my 91 318is. I had installed a bad rebuilt master cylinder with an internal seal leak. Under light braking, the pedal would go to the floor...and I suspect the rear brakes weren't engaging.
If you had a rebuilt cylinder installed, it could be bad. When I replaced mine with a brand new one, everything went back to normal.
